Winter Party Kids Craft Build Your own Snowman

Your-Own Snowman Craft: Snowy Day Activity!
When the snow started falling outside, I knew we needed a cozy winter craft to match the mood. With five kids ranging from 2 to 8, I’m always on the lookout for activities that engage everyone—and this snowman craft did not disappoint!
As a former teacher, I know how much value there is in imaginative play. It builds creativity, encourages problem-solving, and keeps little hands busy (hello, peaceful moment with my coffee!). So, I grabbed some white playdough, a baggie of snowman accessories for each child, and we dove right in.
Setting the Scene
Each child got a ball of soft white playdough and a little baggie filled with snowman magic (Store bought, or things you find around your house work too!):
- Mini carrot noses (made from orange toothpicks or polymer clay).
- Tiny buttons.
- Little eyes (googly eyes or black beads).
- A mini scarf (bits of yarn or ribbon).
- Tiny hats (crafted from bottle caps or fabric scraps).
The excitement was instant. They couldn’t wait to see what was in their baggies and start creating.
Building and Rebuilding
The best part? They spent forever building and rebuilding their snowmen. My 2-year-old focused on sticking the pieces into the playdough, while my older kids got creative with “storylines” for their snow families. One even made a snowdog!
When they finished, some kids wanted to let their snowmen dry and keep them forever, while others carefully packed everything back into their baggies, ready to enjoy the craft again another evening.
Why We Loved This Activity
- Engages All Ages: Every child worked at their own level, and the open-ended nature kept them all entertained.
- Encourages Imaginative Play: Watching them give their snowmen personalities was pure joy!
- Reusable Fun: We’ll get to do this again another snowy day.
How You Can Do It Too!
Here’s how to recreate the fun with your own kids:
What You’ll Need:
- White playdough (store-bought or homemade).
- Accessories: little carrot noses, buttons, googly eyes, mini scarves, mini hats.
- Optional: Snowman molds (if you want to make perfect spheres).
Steps:
- Prepare the Materials: Set up a baggie of accessories for each child.
- Build Snowmen: Let your kids roll playdough into snowballs and decorate their snowmen however they like.
- Dry or Repack: Allow the creations to air dry to keep them as decorations or repack everything for another night.
A Few Tips for Success:
- For younger kids, simplify the accessories (fewer tiny pieces).
- For older kids, challenge them to build a snowman family or add props like sleds or snow pets.
- Save everything in a labeled baggie for easy reuse.
Bonus: This activity is great for practicing fine motor skills and encourages creativity without the mess of real snow indoors (though that’s fun too!).
