When I think back to Christmas as a kid, it wasn’t just the cookies, the lights, or even the presents that made it magical. Those were wonderful, of course, but the thing that truly stands out—the memory that still makes my heart swell—is our Christmas morning “Goose Chase.”
Each year, after the presents had been unwrapped and our stockings emptied in a flurry of excitement, something special would happen. An envelope would quietly appear, one for each of us kids. We knew exactly what it meant: it was time for the Goose Chase.

The Goose Chase was a scavenger hunt, a trail of clues leading us all around the house, from room to room, until we found the final surprise. But here’s the thing—it wasn’t about the gift at the end. Honestly, I can only remember a handful of those gifts. What I do remember, vividly, is the feeling.
The anticipation as we opened the first clue. The thrill of deciphering each hint with my brother and sister, debating what it meant, and racing to the next spot. The joy of being together, laughing, strategizing, and sharing in the excitement. It was pure Christmas magic.
Santa, ever so wise, stopped the Goose Chase once we each got married. I joked about divorcing just to bring it back—kidding, of course—but that’s how much it meant to me.
Passing the Tradition On
Now, as a parent, I get to relive that magic through my own kids. Creating the clues each year is no small task—it’s a mental workout, especially with multiple kids! But seeing their faces light up as they follow the trail is worth every second. Watching them feel that same joy and excitement I once did fills my heart.
